Salt Lake turned into a flashpoint on Thursday afternoon as a BJP protest rally escalated into chaos near the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) office. The demonstration, organized by the Bidhannagar BJP, was aimed at expressing solidarity with the 26,000 teachers who recently lost their jobs following a Supreme Court verdict.
Tensions flared when BJP workers tried to march toward the SSC office. However, a heavy police presence from Bidhannagar Police blocked their movement, leading to confrontations. BJP supporters, refusing to back down, sat on the road and blocked the intersection near Tank No. 10.
Protesters escalated the situation by burning tyres, creating thick plumes of smoke and forcing traffic to a halt. The demonstration caused panic among locals and disrupted daily life in the usually quiet Salt Lake sector. As the situation intensified, police personnel attempted to disperse the protestors. Minor scuffles broke out, and officers were seen dragging away demonstrators from the road. The scene remained tense for over an hour before the protestors were removed.
The BJP claimed that they were protesting peacefully until provoked, while the police maintained that they were only ensuring law and order. Meanwhile, many bystanders expressed concern over the repeated disruptions in the area due to political demonstrations.
